Wish me luck

Well after lots of preparing, shopping, packing, and goodbye-ing I am finally done and ready to go! Wish me luck!

How it all got started

Last December I came across a flyer of a meeting about spending a semester abroad teaching English. I didn’t think much of it, but my roommate Jessica and I were bored one night so we decided to check it out (plus they advertised free food and we were starving college students).

The meeting was about International Language Program (ILP) which is a service program that teaches children English while giving its teachers a cheap, cultural experience. The program has schools in Mexico, Russia, Ukraine, Lithuania, Thailand, and China and teaches hundreds of students. The teachers spend 3-4 hours each weekday teaching the kids English in a way similar to how children learn their native language. Then they spend the weekends and a few weeks throughout the semester traveling.

After doing some research and talking with previous teachers, I decided this is actually something I really wanted to do. I applied, got accepted, and decided on China. I was then assigned to the Mayflora School in Bengbu (it’s a smaller city west of Shanghai) with six other girls. By a lucky chance we all went to the same training so I got to meet everyone; the girls all seem great and I think we’ll have a lot of fun together. We leave on the 29th of this month at 3pm and will come back on December 19th.

Almost four months I will be spending in China and I plan on having lots of adventures—all of which I hope to document on this blog. This blog will be about my teaching experience, traveling, experiencing the culture, eating weird food, trying new things, riding bikes, missing home, having the time of my life, and basically just seeing China through my camera lens. I don’t claim to be a professional, but I love taking pictures and that’s what this blog will mainly consist of. One of my dreams is to see the world and I am finally making it happen—with my first stop in China.

Oh, I’m also out of my mind excited.
